Target population


The target student population for this course is people working as nurses, or clinic personnel who will handle computers to enter data about patients, and are often asked to retrieve information, reports, work on spreadsheets, and conduct internet searches.
 

Eligibility Criteria

We shall ideally admit a student in this course if the student meets the following conditions:
 
  • Completed at least high school (higher secondary and above)
  • Has at least some introduction to computers for offline, classroom based course
  • Has experience of working with computers for online course (should be familiar with email and web)
  • Has access to a computer either at home, at work, or at a cyber cafe
  • Has worked at a medical facility as a clerk or as a nurse for at least six months or or interested in / has the option of being employed therein
  • Can read and write English language ( We hope to provide some training for creating some of the hospital output e.g. e-prescriptions in regional languages on a later basis)

Timeline

The course will run for a total of 20--30 hours, depending on the modules taught. In addition, short, orientation programs lasting for one to two days (equivalent of 20 hour programs: 10 hours each day) will also be offered.
 

Goals

To enable clinic personnel and nurses should use computerized databases, including the Internet to enter, query and produce reports from databases.
 

Overall objectives

We have to prepare the candidates to be able to do routine computer work required in Clinics and hospitals - these will include (some of these may be in the advanced courses)
 
  • Managing Documents
  • Accounts
  • Appointments
  • Inventory control
  • Doing an Internet search for relevant information
  • Gathering all relevant information for making a paper/presentation (Advance)
  • Actual creation of presentations (Advance)

Performance Objectives

After successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
 
  1. Use a computer (Identify components of a computer and be able to use them)
  2. Use an email client (Install/Uninstall, configure, and type mails)
  3. Use an internet browser and search for information over the Net (Install/Uninstall, configure, search, retrieve)
  4. Use a hospital information system (identify the data requirements enough for a requirement analysis)
  5. Know (Define) the basic computer terms like CPU, RAM, HDD, ROM, DVD, etc
  6. Know (Define) basic medical informatics stuff like electronic medical records, telehealth (or telemedicine), medical imaging, public health informatics, evidence based medicine, HL&, DICOM, patient privacy and security issues, etc
  7. Identify the features of a good database management system for handling patient records
  8. Demonstrate skills in database administration activities: namely adding, updating, deleting records (the CRUD stuff:
    create, retrieve, update, and delete records and tuples)
  9. Demonstrate skills in designing databases relevant to medical practice
  10. Demonstrate skills in querying databases relevant to clinic management and medical practice
